Familial aggregation of inflammatory bowel disease in India: prevalence, risks and impact on disease behavior

The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Asia is increasing rapidly nowadays. Although the exact cause of the development of IBD is not yet known, family history is known as one of the important risk factors. However, the proportion of familial IBD in the East is less than in the West. The present study investigated the familial aggregation and the clinical prognosis of patients with IBD in India.
- In this study involving 3,553 patients, familial IBD in India was identified in 4.13% of patients with Crohn’s disease and 4.34% of patients with ulcerative colitis.
- Patients with a family history of IBD were significantly associated with clinical findings regarding poor prognosis, such as pancolitis and fistulating-phenotype (P=0.003; odd ratio [OR], 1.935; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.248-3.000 and P=0.041; OR, 2.044; 95% CI, 1.030-4.056, respectively).
- Familial IBD was associated with higher cumulative relapse, surgery and biologic use.
