This issue chosen by the Editor of Intestinal Research is “Usefulness of the fecal immunochemical test and fecal calprotectin for detection of active ulcerative colitis” was investigated by Dong Ju Kim, et al.
Fecal calprotectin reflects the number of neutrophils in the inflammatory response in the large intestine. Recent studies have shown that fecal calprotectin accurately predicts inflammatory bowel disease inflammation compared to other tests.
In this study the combination of fecal immunochemical test and CRP or fecal calprotectin and CRP were found to be more effective than those of the independent use. Fecal immunochemical test and fecal calprotectin can effectively predict inflammation and reduce the requirement for invasive endoscopic examination
